Arched & Specialty Windows
San Francisco & the Peninsula

Arched tops on Italianate Victorians, transoms over front doors, half-rounds in a gable. San Francisco is full of windows that aren’t rectangles. We measure each one and have it built to fit, so the shape that gives the house its character stays.

How They Work

Made to the
exact shape

Specialty windows include arches, half-rounds, quarter-rounds, eyebrows, trapezoids, octagons and transoms. Most are fixed, though some arched units can open, and many sit above or beside a standard window as part of one composition.

Because old openings are rarely perfect, we take a precise template of each shape rather than relying on nominal sizes. That is what keeps the new frame tight to the old opening, without gaps filled with caulk.

The Upside

Why homeowners
choose them

  • Keeps the character that makes an older house distinctive
  • Brings light into gables, stairwells and over doors
  • Can be paired with double-hungs or casements below
  • Matches original shapes on historic facades
  • Available with grids to match the rest of the house
The Trade-Offs

What to know
before you choose

  • Custom made, so lead times are longer than standard windows
  • Most shapes are fixed and don’t open
  • Curved frames limit some material and color choices
Best Fit

Where specialty shapes fit
SF and Peninsula homes

  • Arched windows on Italianate Victorians in the Western Addition, Alamo Square and the Mission
  • Transoms over front doors and bay windows on Edwardians
  • Half-rounds and quarter-rounds in Queen Anne gables
  • Tudor and Mediterranean homes in San Mateo and Burlingame
  • Stairwells and vaulted rooms in Peninsula homes

On historic facades the shape, the frame profile and the grid pattern all need to match the original. We document the existing window before removal so the replacement is right the first time.

Questions

Specialty Shape window
FAQ

Can you match the arched windows on my Victorian?

Yes. We template the existing arch, match its radius and frame profile, and repeat any grid pattern, so the facade looks as it did.

Do arched windows open?

Many are fixed, but some arched-top units open as casements or hungs. We show you what is available for your shape.

Why does a specialty window take longer?

Each one is built to its own template rather than pulled from stock sizes. We order them early so they arrive with the rest of the job.

Can I replace a transom over my front door?

Yes. Transoms near doors usually need tempered glass, which we include where code requires it.

How much do specialty shape windows cost?

It depends on the brand, material, size, glass and the work around each opening, such as trim, stucco or siding and permits. We don’t quote a number before seeing the home. After we measure, you get a written, itemized proposal with options, permits included, and no obligation to go ahead.
