Garden Windows
San Francisco & the Peninsula

A garden window is a small glass box that projects out from the wall, usually over a kitchen sink. It turns a flat window into a sunny shelf for herbs and plants, and in a foggy neighborhood that extra light makes a real difference.

How They Work

A greenhouse
over the sink

A garden window projects outward, with glass on the front, the sides and a sloped top, and a shelf inside. The top glass lets in daylight from above, which plants love and which brightens the whole kitchen.

Most garden windows have operable side vents, so you can let steam out while cooking. New units use insulated glass all around, so the box doesn’t become a cold spot the way older single-pane garden windows did.

The Upside

Why homeowners
choose them

  • Light from the top and sides, not just the front
  • A deep shelf for herbs, plants or display
  • Side vents for kitchen ventilation
  • Makes a small kitchen feel larger
  • Usually fits an existing flat window opening
The Trade-Offs

What to know
before you choose

  • Projects outward, so it needs clearance outside
  • The top glass needs occasional cleaning
  • Not suited to a street-facing historic facade
Best Fit

Where garden windows fit
SF and Peninsula homes

  • Kitchens in Sunset and Parkside homes that look onto the back garden
  • Tract-home kitchens in Daly City, San Bruno and South San Francisco
  • Peninsula ranch homes with a window over the sink
  • Small kitchens that need more daylight
  • Anyone who wants fresh herbs within reach

Because a garden window projects from the wall, we check what is outside it, such as a walkway, a fence or a property line, before recommending one. Rear and side walls are usually straightforward.

Questions

Garden window
FAQ

Can a garden window replace my existing kitchen window?

Usually, yes. Garden windows are made to fit common window openings, so we can often swap a flat window for one without changing the opening.

Do garden windows open?

Most have side vents that open for ventilation, while the front and top glass is fixed.

Will a garden window make my kitchen cold?

Not a modern one. Insulated glass on every face keeps it close to room temperature. The cold garden windows people remember were single-pane.

Do I need a permit?

Yes, in San Francisco and the Peninsula cities, as with any window replacement. We pull it and meet the inspector.

How much do garden windows cost?

It depends on the brand, material, size, glass and the work around each opening, such as trim, stucco or siding and permits. We don’t quote a number before seeing the home. After we measure, you get a written, itemized proposal with options, permits included, and no obligation to go ahead.
